A Strategic Approach to Workplace Wellbeing

Every organisation is different, so I work closely with you to understand your individual needs and priorities to create a tailored approach based on the latest research, best practice and legislative framework.

The recommended approach will involve the following four steps:

Baseline

A health and wellbeing audit will be carried out to understand the current approach to wellbeing and to identify potential gaps and opportunities for improvement. This confidential audit will map health and wellbeing touchpoints through the employee journey, and review existing health and wellbeing policies, support and contracts.

Measurement and Engagement

I will engage with leadership and employees to agree a definition of wellbeing for the organisation and key focus areas. This may include carrying out 1-2-1s and focus groups to understand health and wellbeing drivers in the organisation.

Strategy

Once a wellbeing baseline has been established and priorities identified, I will work with you to develop the strategy, policies, plan and/or process, as well as Key Performance Indicators, to address health and wellbeing risks and opportunities in the organisation.

Implementation

I can support with leadership briefings and management training to ensure successful implementation and communication. Additional support may include the development of a Wellbeing Communications Calendar, the establishment of a Wellbeing Ambassador Network and the recruitment and/or training of a permanent Health and Wellbeing resource for the organisation, as required.

Bespoke Projects

If you already have a Wellbeing Strategy, or are not ready for one, I can help you with tailor-made projects.

Examples could include:

  • Mapping the employee wellbeing experience.
  • Understanding the impact of the work environment on employee wellbeing.
  • Creating a shared organisational understanding of wellbeing and framework for action.
  • Carrying out employee wellbeing focus groups.
  • Writing a Stress Policy, Mental Health Framework or Mental Health Strategy.
  • Advice on supporting employees with long-term health conditions and on return-to-work.

Coaching

I offer coaching to individuals who want to maximise their wellbeing at work and for leaders who want their teams to thrive.

Coaching can help you understand your priorities, achieve your goals and realise your potential. Focusing on your goals through the lens of your health and wellbeing beliefs and behaviours will ensure lasting results.

Experience

While I have worked hard on my professional and academic credentials, my lived-experience of health challenges and the complexities of managing work and health at an individual and organisational level ensure I take a holistic view of health and wellbeing at work, balancing the needs of the employee with those of the organisation.

Fitness and Community Health

My career in health and wellbeing began with an undergraduate degree in Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Birmingham and a qualification in Personal Training. Initially I coached individual clients with their fitness and nutrition goals as a personal trainer and then moved on to work on community health programmes delivering chair-based exercise classes to the elderly, weight-loss courses to obese teenagers and healthy eating, exercise and alcohol awareness sessions in community groups, schools and workplaces.

Workplace Health and Wellbeing

...

In 2014 I became Head of Occupational Health and Wellbeing at Royal Mail, the UK’s postal service, creating the strategy for the 140,000-employee workforce. I developed a brand for wellbeing in the organisation called ‘Feeling First Class’.

From that we developed First Class Mental Health (prevention, protection and promotion and support), First Class Support (Employee Assistance Programme and occupational health), First Class Fitness (gyms and exercise benefits), First Class Lifestyle (general wellbeing and health behaviours) and the Wellbeing Toolkit (intranet resources and information).

I also worked on sickness absence, rehabilitation, stress management and suicide prevention programmes, alongside the management of traditional health risks (including solar, musculoskeletal disorder, and dust).

...

In 2017 I joined Mace as Director of Health and Wellbeing, responsible for the strategic delivery of occupational hygiene, occupational health and wellbeing for the global workforce. We carried out a psychosocial risk assessment and wellbeing survey in 2017 to establish a baseline to measure progress.

Through the five-year programme the data we collected enabled us to put in place targeted interventions and support, as well as proactive, preventative campaigns.

Our strategic vision for health and wellbeing included five areas: proactively manage health risks, create wellbeing opportunities, use thought leadership to influence our industry and share best practice, healthy buildings and community wellbeing. Our communications and campaigns considered not only the health and wellbeing of our employees but also our clients, supply chain and wider industry in addition to the communities we worked in.

Healthy Building

Working for Mace, a global construction and consultancy organisation, I developed an interest in the impact of the work environment on health and wellbeing.

A growing body of research demonstrates the importance of air quality, workspace design, light, accessibility, access to nature, opportunities for activity and access to healthy foods on the occupants of buildings. Spaces that consider these elements can significantly improve not only individual wellbeing, but also productivity, customer satisfaction and employee engagement.

I studied for the WELL Accredited Professional qualification through the International Well Building Institute in 2018, to enhance my knowledge and advisory capability in this area.
